  • Does anyone have any kid friendly recipies in their cookbooks?

I have an 8 and 11 year old who both like to cook. My oldest is pretty good at reading recipies. I’d like to find some easy things that both the kids can make either together or on their own that requires minimal adult input. They really want to be independant in the kitchen. I’m also looking for things that don’t need the oven, anything that can be served cold or can be put in the microwave would be great.

      Honey, go to http://www.kraftfoods.com
I love that web site have them enter the ingredients they have on hand into the search and kraft lists all the things they can make. Be sure to have them join and they will be able to save the recipes to their own personal recipe box. Also, have them read the reviews form other cooks, they can be very helpful. Have fun!

Maybe try FamilyFun Magazine. They seem to have a lot of kid friendly recipes. http://familyfun.go.com/recipes/

Do you trust them with knives?

("Are you SURE you want to cook a whole meal while mommy just sits here with her book in case you have questions? You’ll have to use the big people’s knives, just like a grown-up! You’re sure? Maybe mommy will take her shoes off and pour herself a tiny glass of chardonnay. . .")

If so, then any sort of salad, from a small green to a Cobb with ham cubes, hard-boiled egg slices, etc. That and a loaf of french bread and you’ve got dinner for a soft summer evening. Gourmet sandwiches sugget themselves too; there are worlds beyond PB&J.

has a cross-reference by about 20 things. Tell it you want a fast main dish that uses tomatoes and beef and it will list a few. Click on "Advanced Search". One category is "Kid Friendly".

If you trust them with the broiler, :

Lightly grease broiler pan. Lay 1 salmon steak per person on broiler, give them 5 minutes on a side.

Melt half a stick of butter in microwave. Add a dash of mustard, juice from a lemon, several pinches of dill. Stir. Slather on salmon after it comes out.

Serve with rice from rice cooker, broccoli spears cooked in microwave, 2004 Ch. St. Jean Chardonnay.

You could try deviled eggs, or Sombrerro’s…a slice of thick bologna, pre-heated, with a scoop of mashed potatoes on top, then top that with a slice of american cheese, broil until cheese melts. Or traveling taco’s…just open a bag of Frito’s corn chips and add a scoop of already prepared taco meat, shredded cheese and lettuce and tomat if you like. Top with a dollop of sour cream, and add a pear salad and you’ve got dinner! You might also try a book called Feed Me I’m Your’s by Vickie Lanskey. It’s an old book, but it has some really great ideas for kid food and kid prep! Good luck with your new chefs! :)
